DSNA Meeting Minutes: January 2025

Minutes Date

Call to order: 7:10PM (Location changed due to “life”.)

Attendance/Introduction question: If I could change one thing about our neighborhood, it would be...coffee shop, grocery store, more community activities… Karen Greene, Dustin, Thomas, Christy Stewart, Natasha, Nicholas, Brad Lancaster, Violet, Faffs, Sky, Claire

Changes/approval of previous month’s minutes. Minutes approved.

Treasurer’s report: Put $100 toward speed bump, now have $469.28

Announcements (external and internal)

  • Brad: work continues on water harvesting chicanes on 9th Ave and University; when it is finished, there will be announcement about planting; Then hope to do two chicanes on South 9th; we also hope to get petition in for backward parking on 5th St before next next new paving; a letter might be going out requesting ADH ramps in all the neighborhood… to not have them continues racial injustice to our neighborhood when they were first not put in.
  • Natasha is thinking about a yard sale to raise funds for the DSNA funds

Discussion

Karen: Sending a letter to the city on behalf of the neighborhood about the liquor license for the Shell at Speedway and Main; There are public hearings for liquor licenses that normally are not attended. Not sure how much feedback State takes from concerned citizens, but it would be a good idea to send a letter to Mayor and Council, perhaps using Brendon’s very thorough letter as a template. Motion made and seconded: Vote 8 in favor, 2 abstain. Sky and Violet will work on letter.
Large Black Trash Barrels - Alexandra (not present, moved to next week)

Newsletter items - Karen: Spring needs to be sent out in March; should include slate of officers. Send articles, suggestions, photos to Christy Stewart, secretary

Karen: Dive into data from summer survey: 10% community filled it out, which is actually good percentage; Everyone loved the newsletter; people said that they would like to meet in person although in reality, attendance is low at in-person meetings; Mailers are effective, but there is only one a year; City has approved two. 41% said they got their neighborhood information from emails; meetings are hard to come to because of childcare or meetings are long and boring; make sure agenda and goals are clear. Will put summary in newsletter

Discussion about how to engage neighbors and how to create a warmer sense of community

We are looking for people interested in connecting to and serving their neighborhood and creating a healthy, safe and happy community. Join the DSNA board! (or at least ask one of us what it involves and if it would work for you)

Brad Lancaster: Discussion on calming chicanes or speed bumps because of throughway driving; has checked gas lines along main streets and has some petitions moving along because of interested neighbors.

Reports from the field

  • Downtown Links: decisions are being made without our input, reneging on previous promises. Karen invited them to come to February or March meetings.
  • Dunbar Coalition: can we check to see if we can have a new rep; is anyone interested in being a rep?
  • HFAC (Historic Fourth Avenue Coalition) Made in Tucson is last Sunday in March, March 30th
  • 11th Ave (it’s in Thrive in the 05) Might be gap funding from HUD if a developer needs it to make the Affordable Housing Project go through
  • Stone/Speedway - HUD Financing to do planning for this project
  • Splinter Collective
  • WAMO (Warehouse Arts Management Organization)
  • For the good of the cause
