Announcements (External and Internal)

District 5 Office/ Ward 1 Announcements + questions with Supervisor Cano - Supervisor Andres Cano outlined his priorities, focusing on supporting local businesses and expanding the Pima Early Education Program Scholarships (PEEPS). He stressed the importance of listening to the community on issues of homelessness, public safety, and housing affordability.

Cano is also focused on finding ways to tackle homelessness, public safety, and boosting housing affordability. Thomas asked how we could continue to be involved on voicing our opposition to Project Blue and Cano mentioned in the meeting the need to keep speaking out against Project Blue and reminding reps we need better local jobs. Kiana and Daniela mentioned issues with neighborhood parks, and Cano confirmed that making The Loop safer is a top county priority. He mentioned a joint City/County meeting next month to figure out a solid plan. He’s also meeting with the Sheriff to hopefully get more caseworkers out there, and he asked everyone to send him photos and personal stories to illustrate what's happening on The Loop. Lastly, Michael raised the question about prepping for the possibility of the federal government sending troops into the city. Cano acknowledged the need and assured us his office was preparing for the response as needed.

Discussion

a. Introduction to Beyond Racing (Daniela - 5 min) - Daniela gave a brief introduction to Beyond Racing, a non-profit organization founded in 2011. The group's mission is to bring people together, keep them active and healthy, and build a stronger community. Their current initiatives include the Beyond Hiking program and the Beyond Bikes program. You can find their Headquarters at 44 W 2nd Street.

b. Ongoing safety and sanitation issues near 2nd St and 13th Ave (Daniela, possible guest(s) - 15 min) - Daniela brought up the ongoing problems near 2nd Street and 13th Avenue, specifically the challenges they are facing with the houseless population. They noted that encampments have been shifting and are now spilling out into the streets at the very end of 2nd Street, creating safety and sanitation issues. They have reached out to the City and various resource managers for help. They specifically asked the Ward 1 office if there is still a community resource officer available for that area, and also suggested opening the bathrooms at Estevan Park to hopefully ease some of the immediate sanitation problems caused by the encampments.

c. Treasurer Election (5 min) (VOTE) - We are in need of a new treasurer and Thomas pitched to see if anyone would want to be Treasurer. Laiken Jordahl. Unanimous Yes for Laiken, 12 yes, 0 No.

d. Google Meet price increase and renewal (Thomas - 5 min) (VOTE) - The price of Google meet, the tool we use for virtual meetings and document storage is increasing by $2 a month(from $12 to $14) starting next year. Unanimously pass for accepting price increase and renewal

e. Roll-off dumpster location (Thomas - 5 min) - We had a brief discussion on where the optimal location for roll-off dumpster would be for the next time we get them.
